Humans are inherently curious beings. In Science class,
we use this trait to our advantage. We begin our year with a unit on
scientific processes. In this unit and throughout the year each student
learns how to formulate questions, recognize and state scientific problems,
make hypotheses, test their hypotheses, collect data, interpret their
data by using tables and graphs, and make inferences and draw conclusions
that will serve to deepen their understanding of the natural world and
scientific processes. In short, the students will become critical thinkers.
Each grade’s curriculum integrates physical, earth, and life sciences.
The 6th graders will be introduced
to the properties of matter, energy and forces of motion. They will
also cover Earth’s materials and resources, properties of the
Earth’s air and water as well as the structure and function of living organisms.
The 7th graders will learn about
the properties of substances, energy transfer through photosynthesis,
respiration and fermentation. They will also cover the structure and
function of living systems, the structure of the Earth system and the
role of organisms within our Earth system.
The 8th graders will cover the structure and
properties of matter and substances. They will also cover the physical
characteristics of minerals as well as the rock cycle, the structure
of the Earth system, the geologic history of the Earth, and Earth’s
place in our solar system.
We use our textbook as a resource as well as a guide
for many of our lessons. However, the textbook is not the curriculum.
Students use their authentic experiences in the laboratory to understand
how to think critically. Due to the nature of our activities, the class
works in groups. Each member of each group has a specific role, and
roles rotate throughout the year. Through these roles, the students
get a chance to learn about group dynamics and cooperation as well as
scientific content.
