The Religious Education Program at Corpus Christi School
is a diverse and multifaceted course that develops throughout the 6th,
7th, and 8th grade years. Students are taught the tenets of the Catholic
faith, and they also will continue to develop their own spirituality.
Our classes, in all grade levels, are based on the guidelines found
in the curriculum guide furnished by the Diocese of Galveston-Houston.
Our textbooks, Faith First, published by RCL, are
a framework for what is taught.
The students will grow in spirituality, and in their own development
in forming a personal relationship with God. Our students develop skills
which allow them to foster and thrive in the realms of sacred morality
and Christian values. Some of the techniques used in this class involve
hands on activities, dramatization, and service-oriented projects in
the school as well as the community.
6th Grade
The 6th grade will explore who they are in relationship
to God, and how to form a deeper relationship with God. Examples of
establishing a relationship with God will be studied by focusing on
examples that are provided in the Old and New Testament. We will look
to modern day leaders in our Church, nation, parish, school, neighborhood,
friends, and family to see how this witness is demonstrated. Decision
making based on our relationship with God will also be a focus of our
classes.
Some of the core tenets of our faith that the students
will be learning about are: the parts of the Mass, the Sacraments, the
Beatitudes, Sacred Scripture, the Ten Commandments, saints, corporal
and spiritual works of mercy, and all major doctrines.
Seventh Grade
Many of the themes taught in the sixth grade are repeated
at a deeper level in the seventh grade. The students’ relationship
with God should be formed and deepened this year. A consciousness of
God’s presence in our everyday lives should be experienced at
this age. Awareness is key to living as Christ has taught us. We will
continue to look to Sacred Scripture, leaders in our world, the Church,
and our communities that surround us to experience this ongoing and
deepening relationship with God. Different forms of prayer will be introduced:
meditation, prayer journals, standard prayers, and communal prayer.
The sacraments are studied as a way to deepen our spirituality and to
improve ourselves on a constant basis.
Students will take a deeper look at the Mass, the Beatitudes,
Sacred Scripture, the Ten Commandments, the saints’ lives, works
of mercy, grace, angels, and mystical experience.
Eighth Grade
This year is a culmination of all that the students have
learned throughout their elementary years in school. The teacher will
look at students’ individual knowledge to ensure that a clear
understanding of our faith, relationship with God, Scripture, and all
of the tenets of our faith are understood.
Students will continue to develop a deep relationship
with God, in prayer and in daily interaction with each other. Different
forms of prayer will be explored and experienced, such as, communal
prayer, (i.e., Mass, lauds and vespers), the rosary, litanies, novenas,
meditation, and prayer journals. Service projects will be a concrete
way of seeing ourselves as God’s instruments in our world.
