Prekindergarten at CCCS is a full-day program that is designed to create
self-motivated, responsible learners within a developmentally appropriate
curriculum. It is a program that enhances the spiritual, social, intellectual,
and physical development of each child.
Children participate in daily “circle time” including opening
prayer and Pledge of Allegiance. In the prekindergarten room, there
are multiple basic learning stations including dramatic play, blocks,
library, math, language arts, science, listening center, and art. Each day, the children
work in small groups with the teacher at the lesson table. The teacher
reads and works on phonemic awareness activities. Math lessons are also
taught in small groups. Science and Social Studies are whole group lessons
with hands-on activities. Students have a quiet time each day to rest
or nap.
Our Prekindergarten program encourages parental involvement and communication.
To foster a partnership between parents and teacher, parents are encouraged
to participate in ongoing activities within the established routines,
special events, field trips, and parties. A weekly newsletter is delivered
each Monday to inform parents of the upcoming week’s activities
and objectives.
The Prekindergarten day also offers other learning opportunities such
as music, Spanish, religion, and outdoor play.
Religion
Students have a daily religion lesson during which Catholic values and
beliefs are taught. The program helps to teach the children the following Sunday's Gospel reading in an age-appropriate language. Gospel teachings are also reinforced through activities and focus themes. Students open and close
each school day with prayer and attend an all-school Mass every week.
Fine Arts
Music classes are designed so that all children sing and participate.
Twice a week, the children attend music class where they learn
songs and simple dances. Students perform on special occasions such
as Grandparents Day, the Christmas Program, and the Spring Program.
Students also attend art class once weekly. The art teacher works with
students on arts and crafts encouraging each child to express creativity
and originality.
Spanish
Prekindergarten students begin to learn Spanish as a second language.
They are introduced to the language through colors, counting, and singing.
Rhymes and chants are used to teach vocabulary. Spanish is taught three times a week.
Library
The students visit the school library once a week, where they enjoy storytime with the school librarian.
