6th and 7th grade
Middle school math is an exciting change for our students.
Every student is challenged to become competent in technology associated
with math. The following information highlights our 6th and 7th grade
mathematics program:
• Use of TI 73 Explorer graphing calculators
and to create graphs, simulate probability situations, explore integers
and the coordinate plane.
• Use of Geometer’s Sketchpad on the 8 classroom computers
to further explore algebraic and geometric concepts visually.
• Use of a wide variety of materials for hands on learning of
initial concepts in both algebra and geometry, including hinged mirrors,
algebra tiles, hands on equations, decimal factory blocks, rainbow
cubes, pattern blocks, tangrams and much more.
• A variety of grouping techniques, including individual work,
pairs and groups of four to promote both individual competence and
the ability to work cooperatively.
• Our textbooks, McDougal Little Course I and II, are supplemented
by many units from other sources.
• Teachers who are active members of the National Council of
the Teachers of Mathematics and attend annual workshops and training
to stay abreast of research.
8th grade
Our eighth grade students are tested in the spring of
seventh grade and placed into Algebra I or Pre-algebra in accordance
with diocesan guidelines. The following information highlights our 8th
grade mathematics program:
• Continued use of graphing calculators. Our 8th graders are permitted to upgrade to the TI 84 for Algebra, or they continue using the TI 73 in Pre-Algebra.
• Use of computers, calculators, paper and pencil and hands
on materials to master the geometry, computation, and algebra concepts
key to success in high school algebra.
• Use of Excel to become accustomed to spreadsheets.
• Continued emphasis on doing math by hand.
• A variety of grouping techniques, including individual work,
pairs and groups of four to promote both individual competence and
the ability to work cooperatively.
•The 8th grade textbooks, including Prentiss Hall for Algebra I, is supplemented by many units from other sources.
• Our Algebra I students complete the entire course expected
of first year high school students.
•Teachers attend the National Council of the Teachers of Mathematics and TI annual workshops and conferences, to stay abreast of research.
